Guinea-Bissau Defense

The lower ranks of the 9,200-strong armed forces are mainly Balante from the south. Resentment at their lack of promotion and the predominance of mestiços in the senior ranks was a cause of the 1980 coup. Troops serve with the UN in Angola and Mozambique.
